Scouting Report: Kevin Davidson

Two years ago we provided a way-too-early scouting report on quarterback Kevin Davidson. Let's fast-forward to today and find out where he's at.

The UC Davis commitment has had a nice high school career as a starting quarterback who finished his high school career where he started it, at San Ramon Valley.

Strengths: Davidson's arm strength has always been one of his greatest assets. Nobody questions his ability to rifle the ball into the hands of receivers who are at spots on the field that some other passers can't hit.

At the Rivals Quarterback Challenge he attended in the spring he also drew praise for his decision-making ability, his size and even his accuracy in pressure-filled settings.

He's a fierce competitor at quarterback who is going to get the most of his talent and doesn't give up on a play until the whistle blows. He's also got a solid composition so there really aren't concerns about his durability.

Areas for Improvement: Sometimes Davidson goes cold and his mechanics fall apart a bit. And when he's pressured he doesn't throw nearly as well, or respond nearly as well overall, when he has to leave the pocket.

When he can stand tall in the pocket and has the time to make the throws he wants to make, and his reads as they're called, he's very good. He has yet to show a strong ability to improvise.

One clear area for improvement is his footwork out of the pocket and on his drops. His accuracy will improve if he can work on his mechanics in his lower body.

Davidson does have a lot of game experience but he lost some last year when he was ruled ineligible for most of his junior season following his transfer to McClymonds.

Bottom Line: Two years ago we predicted that Davidson would be in line for an impressive ranking and his three-star (5.5) ranking today does somewhat validate that. However, we did expect more offers to come his way than he ultimately received.

At UC Davis it's tough to imagine him having to wait a long time to get his opportunity to be a starting quarterback. He's probably found a school where he'll have ample opportunities to showcase himself early and develop over time with a lot of game experience.
