Mustangs outlast DLS

On Tuesday night, the No. 35 ranked team in the nation, Monte Vista traveled to Concord to play a De La Salle squad that was hungry to win an East Bay Athletic League title this season. The Mustangs got double digit scoring from Trevor John, Rishi Satoor, and Grant Jackson to squeeze out a 49-46 victory over the Spartans.
A closely contested game, which featured over 14 lead changes, was tied 44-44 as Spartan sophomore guard Jordan Ratinho drained a three pointer to tie the Mustangs. As the game got closer to ending, John hit two clutch free throws which placed Monte Vista up 49-46. Ratinho would put up another three pointer at the buzzer, but it was blocked by Mustang center Spencer Rust.

John had 10 points and five assist on the night. Jackson added 13 points while Rust contributed on defense with three blocks.
"The goal is to win the North Coast Section title and then take the State Championship," said John who is signed to Cal Poly.
It was not a bad night at all for the Spartans as they also had scorers in double digits. Senior forward Patrick Marr and sophomore guard Devin Asiasi did most of the scoring as Marr had 13 and Asiasi added 11. De La Salle seemed to struggle from the free throw line hitting 12-of-21 attempts. Their counterparts went a solid 8-for-9 from the line, including the two clutch free throws from John at the end to seal the deal.
This is the second time this season the Spartans have lost to Monte Vista as they now drop to second place in the East Bay Athletic League. With three games left on their regular season schedule, De La Salle will now look forward to hosting San Ramon Valley on Friday.
The win gives Monte Vista sole ownership of first place in the EBAL. With a 22-1 record (10-1 in league), the Mustangs look to be in playoff form. With a playoff birth and a great seed locked up, the immediate focus is the last game of the season, when they host San Ramon Valley, a team who handed the Mustangs their only loss.
