Vallejo has seen many great basketball players dating back to the days of Gerald Jones, a former two sport standout in football and basketball, who went on to play basketball at UCLA in the mid 1980s. One of the better players to make it out of Vallejo recently, was Brandon Armstrong, a smooth jump shooting guard who went to Vallejo High School, before starring at Pepperdine University, where he was all league in 2000 and MVP of the West Coast Conference in 2001.

The New Jersey Nets selected him in the first round of the 2001 NBA draft. Armstrong now wants to give back to the community that supported him. He will be one of the main basketball instructors at the Jumpers R Us Basketball Camp at Jessie Bethel High School. The basketball camp will teach the youngsters the fundamentals of the game, in passing, dribbling, shooting and defense.
"I am going to teach the things that I have learned over the years," said Armstrong. "The specific things it takes them to get to certain levels of the game."
Armstrong will be one of the main instructors along with Brian Shaw, a former standout at Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland and a three-time NBA Champion with the Los Angeles Lakers.
"The camp is a way to teach these kids a lot of the fundamentals of basketball," continued Armstrong. "I just want to support them and give back."
The camp for kids aged 6-16, will take place June 23-25th from 8:30-4:00 p.m. at Jesse Bethel High School in Vallejo. The cost is $100.00 for the session and lunch will be provided.
Dwayne Jones, the head basketball coach at Jesse Bethel and camp director said that others scheduled to work the camp include Oakland street ball legend Demetrius "Hook" Mitchell and former Vallejo High standout Demarcus Nelson, a 2004 McDonald’s All American, who is headed to Duke University next year.
"You will not be able to find a camp at a bargain price where you have two NBA players talking about what it takes to get there," said Jones. "This camp will be good for the kids and the community."
