Valley Christian, Sutter win openers

Warriors muscle their way to win

The size of Valley Christian’s lines and experience at the skill positions highlighted the preseason talk. Both facets played out as expected on Friday in a 21-7 win over No. 19 Campolindo in a NCP Top 20 matchup.

The No. 10 Warriors got on the board on an 11 yard touchdown pass from Miles Kendrick to Anthony Flores. Campolindo evened the score at seven going into the half on a touchdown run from senior Noah Loeliger.

Despite three turnovers, including one at the goaline, Valley Christian took control in the second half. Down 13-7, Campolindo got the ball on the Warriors’ three yard line off an interception, but turned it back over on a sack and fumble. Valley Christian took the ball and went 94 yards to push the margin to two scores on a Javon Sturns touchdown run. Sturns finished with a game high 137 yards and a score.

Valley Christian will play Wilcox next week while Campolindo stays in the Central Coast Section with a trip to St. Ignatius. Douglas Benton

Sutter delivers opening statement

The Northern Section has been more active in searching out games against some of the top teams in NorCal. In its second meeting with Palma, Sutter notched one of its most impressive victories with a 52-31 win over No. 17 Palma.

This was game that Sutter executed very well (no turnovers) while at the same time took it away 3 times from Palma. Sutter was led by junior QB Tyler Reynolds who was outstanding running their read offense as he accounted for 238 yards rushing and passing.

On defense Sutter was stout at the point of attack led by OLB Trey Slade who had an interception and fumble recovery. When Sutter went up by 3 scores early in the third quarter and forced Palma into throwing the ball it highlighted the back end of the Sutter defense that was outstanding on Friday.

Palma came out running the football with senior Emilio Martinez who runs with power between the tackles as well as shows the speed to run away from defenders as he did on his 44 yard touchdown. Martinez impressed with his desire to compete no matter the score. He finished with 189 yards and three touchdowns. Michael Benton

The NCP Game of the Week showed Elk Grove is ready to continue on with its success after beating Inderkum 37-6. Elk Grove scored the first 13 points and won the second half 17-0 en route to the impressive win.

The biggest surprise for a ranked team came when Foothill-Pleasanton fell to San Leandro (38-24). The Pirates had lost 10 straight games to East Bay Athletic League foes with the last win coming against Monte Vista in the 2005 playoffs.
