OALs past to benefit the future
This Saturday, October 21 at Laney College in Oakland, prep fans in the Bay Area will have the opportunity to go back in time with the Oakland Athletic League's (OAL) Alumni All-Star game, sponsored by the Youth Entertainment Network (YEN). The game, coordinated by Castlemont alum Vincent Goldman, a key member of the 1981 Knights' run to the title game (a 70-69 loss to Bishop O'Dowd) in the first state championship game of the modern era, will serve as a benefit and proceeds will go to the OAL to help offset cost of maintaining athletic programs in the league.
Goldman, elaborating on the objective of the game said, "the idea was to find a way for players from the past to give back to their community. Also, youngsters will experience a living history lesson when they see these players take the floor."
A history lesson is exactly what's in store. The OAL's dominance of the local prep scene from the McClymonds team of the late 50s and early 60s to Castlemont and Fremont's frequent trips to the Tournament of champions (TOC) in the late 60s through the early 80s has been well-chronicled, but many of the players, especially from the latter period, will either participate or be in attendance. The list includes:
Castlemont
1969 TOC champs: Mike Quick (USF)
1973: Reggie Green (Seattle University) and Jeff Randall (USF)
1976 TOC champs: Oscar Williams, Robert Grissom
1979 TOC champs: Henry Pressley, Lathan Wilson (Langston University), Louis Wooldridge (College of Notre Dame)
1980-81: Wilson, Goldman, and Bryan Flowers
Fremont
Legendary coach Leo Allamano (who will coach during the game), Victor and Vernon Hampton, James Dailey
1980 TOC champs: Derrick Seay, Ray Lankford (Oregon St.), Jerry Daye, and Cary Noble
McClymonds
1978 TOC champs: Ernest Brooks and Louis Payne, Bryant Stanley (1981)
Some other notable alums like Cliff Robinson (Castlemont, USC, and NBA star with Washington and Philadelphia), Peter Thibeaux (Skyline High, St. Mary's College/Golden St. Warriors), and Lloyd Moseby (Oakland High, Toronto Blue Jays) are unable to attend.
The event will be hosted by the Bay Area's own Nick Harper (formerly of 107.7 KSOL, the popular urban music station of the 70s and 80s). For more information, call YEN at 510-342-0222
