Mitty tops No. 1 St. Francis

Late game heroics. Strong starting pitching. Fluid standings. It was just another day in the West Catholic Athletic League as Mitty beat No. 1 St. Francis 2-1.
St. Francis-Mountain View scored its lone run in the top of the seventh to force extra innings, but Mitty eventually beat the top ranked Lancers 2-1 to create a three way tie in the WCAL at 5-2. Valley Christian is also 5-2 in league.

Senior CJ Romero had a game winning hit and picked up the win after relieving starter Kris Bubic (Stanford). The junior went six innings in scattering five hits and striking out five. Trent Scharrenberg had a team high two hits for the Monarchs. St. Francis ace John Gavin (Cal State Fullerton) threw nine innings of one run ball in tallying 13 strikeouts.
The first round of league play is finished except for today's game between Bellarmine and Riordan. If the Bells can pick up the win, five teams will be separated by a game.
In other Friday action, Bellarmine beat Sacred Heart Cathedral (3-2), Serra knocked off St. Ignatius (3-1) and Valley Christian-San Jose shutout Riordan (1-0).
Other highlights
UCLA signee Matt Trask picked up the win on the mound and added two RBI at the plate in a 6-2 win over Elk Grove. The result leaves the Thundering Herd and Grant tied at 4-1 in the Delta Valley Conference. Davis and Franklin-Elk Grove, which play a two game set next week, are 3-2.
Willow Glen managed a split with Westmont after winning the finale 5-0 on Friday. Senior left-hander Wes Malik threw a complete game with 10 strikeouts. The Rams' three losses (Westmont, Los Gatos, Wilcox) are a combined 36-9. They will face Division II ranked Palo Alto on Monday.
Los Gatos made its statement that it should be taken seriously in the De Anza League with a 6-3 win over Wilcox to sweep the two game series. Johnny Breidenthal and Corey Olivet (San Jose State) each had two hits and a RBI. Breidenthal added 5 innings on the mound for the win. The Wildcats travel to Westmont next Friday.
Following a 1-6 start, Bishop O'Dowd has won seven in a row after winning a Thursday doubleheader against Oakland Tech (4-0) and Freedom (2-0). Against Oakland Tech, Washington signee Channing Nesbitt threw five inning of one run ball with eight strikeouts. On the year, he is 2-3 with a 3.33. He has struck out 29 batters in 21 innings.
Outside of a loss to Del Oro at Raley Field, Vista del Lago is perfect after sweeping a three game series from El Dorado (9-4, 9-1, 5-0). El Dorado came into the series 10-2. In Friday's 5-0 win, Tyler Kaim had a home run and three RBI. On the mound, he threw a five hit shutout with 10 strikeouts.
