Going out to Palm Beach, Florida for the USA Baseball 16U East Championship may have seemed daunting for some squads, but not for California Club Baseball. CCB, formed in 2006, finished the tournament at 10-0 and outscored its opponents 105-35 in bringing home the program's first national championship.
"We run ruled five of the 10 (games) and played three of the top programs in the country," CCB Head Director Erick Raich said of his team's performance. "Just a great group of players who came together in a short amount of time. They came together in three weeks and played like they had been together for three years."
Asked about the goals for the team heading into the tournament, Raich expected to get into the round of 32 and see what played out after that. The location though was unexpected as CCB found themselves in the East Championship instead of the West Championship held in Arizona.
Unsure of the reason for their placement, Raich said of the team's mentality, "We wanted to make it so that they won't want to send (us) back out here again."
Still, it is another example of Northern California baseball shining on the national stage as a hotbed for the sport.
"Northern California is a great hotbed for baseball," Raich said. "Teams out in Florida kind of wait for the three run homer and we ran and stole a lot of bases and put pressure on them."
Locally, it is another validation for the greater Bay Area and the talent is produces annually.
"I think that the South Bay, East Bay and Central Coast has always had lots on baseball talent here," Raich said. "The best part of our CCB 16U team winning a big event like the USA Baseball Championships is it puts the South Bay, East Bay and Central Coast area's on the map for an amateur baseball hotbed nationally. "
Below is a roster for the CCB 16U team with notes on each player from Raich:
Ryan Bangs OF/LHP Salinas 2011: Bangs produced a number of great at-bats and turned in a great pitching outing against the Orlando Scorpions.
Ti Demeo OF/RHP Santa Cruz 2012: Demeo was a terror on the base paths tallying five to 10 steals throughout the tournament.
Daniel Edwards UTL Monterey 2012: Edwards was a true utility player in lining up at multiple positions and hitting roughly .580 with no strikeouts. He acted as a second lead-off guy from the No. 9 spot for CCB.
Conner Jauch INF/RHP Bellarmine College Prep 2012: Jauch threw three great innings against All American Prospects to set up a come from behind win. He also played tremendous defense at 3B and 2B and provided good at-bats coming off the bench.
Michael Jenkerson OF/RHP St. Francis (Mountain View) 2012: Jenkerson was a platoon outfielder and produced great at-bats with stellar defense. He also brought great speed to the line-up.
Logan Lombana INF/RHP Newark Memorial 2012: Lombana had a 2-0 record and an ERA of less than 2.00 for the tournament.
Christian Lonski C/OF Palo Alto 2012: Lonski had a good offensive week in handling the back-up catcher role.

Daniel Miller OF/LHP Santa Teresa 2011: Miller hit a grand slam in game one and had one of the best overall tournaments.

Ben Sneider RHP Palo Alto 2012: Sneider was an innings eater for CCB in logging 10 innings of work and giving up just three earned runs.
Jimmy Wallace RHP Bellarmine College Prep 2012: Wallace threw a no-hitter in the round of 32 for CCB.
Larry Walkley C/1B Bellarmine College Prep 2012: Walkley was excellent behind the dish in working with the pitchers and played spectacular defense.
