Recruits excel in Area Codes

The Oakland A's Area Code team, based out of the Northern California region, topped the Southern California based Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday with a 3-2 victory in Long Beach.

After stranding runners on second and third in the top of the first inning, Oakland got on the board when an RBI 4-3 putout from Head-Royce's Nico Hoerner plated De La Salle's Michael McAdoo in the second inning. The A's added another run in the fourth when McAdoo drove in College Park's Nick Oar on another 4-3 putout.

Milwaukee tied it up in the fifth behind an RBI single from DaShawn Kerlsey Jr. In the same play, a runner from second scored when the cutoff man overthrew the third baseman trying to back pick the runner. The game was tied 2-2 after the fifth.

The A's scored the game-winning run when College Park's Trevor Larnach notched a one-out single, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball, and took home on a balk in the seventh inning. Central right-hander Colton Eastman earned the win on the mound.

Oakland is now 2-0-1 in Long Beach with two games remaining. The top performers from Thursday are listed below:

Kris Bubic, LHP, 6-2 195 pounds (Archbishop Mitty 2015): The crafty southpaw tossed three scoreless innings and struck out two hitters. He allowed three hits, but didn't allow solid contact as two were bloop singles and the other was an infield hit. Bubic showed good command of his fastball and although he doesn't overpower hitters, he threw a changeup and curveball consistently for strikes. The Stanford commit finished his first hitter with a curveball for a strikeout pitch and his last hitter with a strikeout on a fastball. Bubic threw 22 strikes in 38 pitches and did not walk a batter. He started eight of his 12 hitters with first pitch strikes.

Colton Eastman, RHP, 6-3 200 pounds (Central 2015): Eastman threw two perfect innings and showed a plus curveball. He struck out two hitters - using the curveball as the finishing pitch in both at-bats - and did not allow a ball out of the infield. He threw 14 strikes in 19 pitches and started five of his six batters with first pitch strikes. Eastman is one of the top uncommitted prospects on the roster.

Nick Madrigal, MINF, 5-8 155 pounds (Elk Grove 2015): Although he lacks ideal size, Madrigal was reliable at shortstop and 2-for-3 at the plate. The Oregon State commit had a pair of singles and showed his speed with a stolen base. Madrigal is a scrappy player who excelled at shortstop while he can play second base as well. He has quick hands at the plate and should be a nice addition to the always talented Oregon State squad.

Michael McAdoo, OF, 6-2 200 pounds (De La Salle 2015): McAdoo was aggressive at the dish and went 1-for-3 with an RBI. He is a good athlete with range in the outfield and provides a nice bat as well. McAdoo is committed to play at UC Santa Barbara.

Matthew McGarry, RHP, 6-3 190 pounds (Menlo-Atherton 2015): The Vanderbilt commit showed quality stuff in two innings of work. His fastball sits in the low 90s while he also shows flashes with a changeup and curveball. McGarry allowed runners to reach on a walk, hit by pitch, and single while he struck out two hitters. He surrendered two runs, although only one was earned. The righty has a live arm with potential but will need to work on his command. He threw 13 strikes in 26 pitches but will be another quality pitcher for the defending NCAA champions.

Nick Oar, OF/1B, 6-2 215 pounds (College Park 2015): Oar had the hardest hit ball of the game with a triple that allowed him to score in the next at-bat. He also had a nice catch at first where he was able to stretch to catch a ball headed towards right field while keeping his foot on the bag. The Stanford commit will provide some pop for the Cardinal and can play multiple spots in the field.
