Falcons win pitching duel

It was safe to assume runs would be at a premium Tuesday afternoon as College Park's Joe DeMers and Clayton Valley's Austin Cannedy squared off.

Both pitchers fulfilled their end of the bargain, but it was College Park's offense that eventually broke through as the Falcons topped the Ugly Eagles 3-0.

The loss - Clayton Valley's first at home - dropped the Ugly Eagles to 21-2 while the Falcons won their fifth game in a row and improved to 19-3.

While Cannedy began the game cruising through the Falcons line-up - retiring eight of the first nine batters he faced - Ethan Cook's RBI single gave College Park a 1-0 lead in the fourth.

An inning later, as the Falcons were getting their third look at CV's right-hander, they finally broke through.

Cannedy retired the first two hitters he faced in the fifth, but then lost control.

College Park's Jeff Mitchell and Willie MacIver drew back-to-back walks before Trevor Larnach drove them both home with a double to right field.

Just as the Falcons offense got better as the game went on, so did DeMers.

College Park's right-hander threw a complete game shutout while striking out seven and allowing just three hits. DeMers finished the game retiring 14 of the last 16 batters he faced.

The Ugly Eagles did not have a lot of chances to score off DeMers and the few chances they did have, they did not take advantage of as they finished 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position.

Clayton Valley had a runner on second with one out in the first and a runner on third with one out in the second. After that, DeMars kept the Ugly Eagles from advancing past first.
