Wildcats rally past Elk Grove
Franklin used seventh inning heroics to beat Elk Grove in a wild Delta Valley Conference race. Theron Kay adds a big day on the mound and at the plate while Bella Vista suffered its first loss of the year.
No. 16 Franklin-Elk Grove knocked off No. 3 Elk Grove 7-6. Holding a 5-3 lead heading into the seventh, Franklin surrendered three runs to Elk Grove before staging a bottom of the seventh rally with two runs. Jordan Estes and Gabe Abelia each had two hits. Zachary Tresemer had two RBI on his game winning hit, according to John Hull of the Elk Grove Citizen. Senior Cameron Keup battled for a complete game in striking out nine batters.
With Davis' win over Laguna Creek (4-2) and Grant beating Laguna Creek (7-2), there are four teams sitting at 2-1 before the completion of the first run through the Delta River Conference on Friday. Games to watch the rest of the week are Franklin hosting Grant today and Davis traveling to Elk Grove on Friday.
Elk Grove remains the favorite in the DVC with Davis and Franklin in the NCP Top 20. Grant is on the Division I bubble. The DVC had produced the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I North winner three of the last four years.
Kay shines in win
The Lancers scratched out a fourth inning run, but that's all they got in a 1-0 win over Riordan. Tyler Deason threw a complete game four hitter with 15 strikeouts. Ryan Johnson knocked in Deason for the deciding run.
Next up for the top ranked Lancers is a trip to Mitty, which fell to Valley Christian-San Jose (5-0) on Tuesday. In the win, Warriors' ace Theron Kay had a no-hitter with six strikeouts. He added a home run and four RBI at the plate.
Bella Vista suffered its first loss of the year to Oakmont (3-2) after getting out to a 9-0 start. The Broncos had outscored their opponents by five runs per game before the loss. Oakmont improves to 7-1-1 with a loss to Christian Brothers and a tie against Lincoln. The Vikings are giving up just more than three runs per game in holding Bella Vista to a season low run total.
Los Gatos handed Wilcox its second De Anza League loss with a 6-2 victory on Wednesday. The 14-2 Wildcats got five innings from senior Cameron Ackerman. Aiden Finch went 2-for-3 with three RBI and Corey Olivet had a pair of hits, including a double. Wilcox has lost two in a row after an 11-1 start.
In a Mount Hamilton battle, Westmont beat Willow Glen (9-2) to move within a half game of the league lead. Junior Mike Morbo had four RBI in the win. The two league leaders will meet on Friday to cap their two game series.
Monte Vista held off Livermore (2-1) for the Mustangs' first East Bay Athletic League win. Pacific bound catcher Lucas Halstead went 2-for-3 and is now 11-for-22 on the year with seven extra base hits and 11 RBI. Sam Carter threw five innings of one run ball to even his record at 2-2. He allowed five hits and struck out three batters in the win. Daniel Slominski had a pair of hits in the loss.
Austin Cannedy picked up his fifth win in Clayton Valley Charter's 13-0 win over Milpitas. The 10-0 Ugly Eagles have only played four games decided by three runs or less. They will be at the Elite Eight at St. Francis later this month and have a two game set against College Park in May. The Falcons bounced back from a two game split with Concord to beat Alhambra (5-1). 2015 UC Davis commit Chris Brown moved to 4-0 with six innings of one run ball. Junior Willie MacIver had a double and two RBI in the win.
