Girls semi-finals are set
There were surprises, dominant individual performances and continued marches to possible regional titles. We cover it all in another busy night of high school basketball.
Making the long trip from Danville to El Dorado Hills, Monte Vista beat Oak Ridge 53-42 to earn an unexpected semi-final home game on Tuesday. Madi Burroughs had 17 points as one of three players in double figures.
For the second straight game, Pleasant Grove picked up a two point road win in beating Wilcox 37-35. The Eagles will make their third trip to the Bay Area on Tuesday against the Mustangs in trying to reach the program's first regional final.
A pair of juniors were top performers in Berkeley's 68-62 overtime win over McClatchy. Jaiamoni Welch-Coleman had 27 points to offset McClatchy post Destiny Lee (23 points).
After losing to Santa Rosa in December, No. 1 seed Deer Valley avenged that loss with a 71-56 win on Saturday. The Wolverines will host Berkeley on Tuesday in a rematch of the North Coast Section Division I finals.
Kelli Hayes had 14 points as 11 different Monarchs scored in a 71-35 win over Dublin. The Monarchs will host Clayton Valley Charter on Tuesday after it beat Lynbrook 52-45. Kayla Taylor and Hailey Pascoe combined for 42 points.
Del Oro's 53-52 win over Presentation marked the second NorCal win for the Golden Eagles over Presentation in the last four years. The Golden Eagles relied on their inside game with Hannah Jordan and Lauren Heyn combining for 29 points.
Brittany Butler had 26 points and Tiara Tucker added 20 points in McNair's easy 90-39 win over Chico to reach the semi-finals. The Eagles will host Del Oro on Tuesday.
Dalayna Sampton had 23 points and led Florin in the NorCal semi-finals with a 49-44 win over Valley Christian-San Jose. Florin was the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III runner-up.
Sophomore Kamira Sanders had 16 points in Enterprise's 53-43 win over Patterson. The Hornets reached the semi-finals last year, but are looking to become the first Northern Section team to make a regional final in more than a decade.
The expected SJS Division III final will play out in a NorCal semi-final between Vanden and Modesto Christian. Vanden beat Encinal 58-54 while Modesto Christian defeated Soquel 62-42. Three of the four semi-finalists hail from the SJS.
Piedmont is one win away from reaching its second straight regional final after upsetting Bradshaw Christian (46-45). Lauren Seyranian had 20 points in the win. Bradshaw Christian junior Erika Bean had 24 points.
Joining Piedmont from the NCS are Justin-Siena (51-35 over West Campus) and Arcata (44-40 over West Valley). This comes in a year when two section schools (Salesian and St. Mary's-Berkeley) were moved up to the Open Division.
Top seed Scotts Valley defeated Cardinal Newman 58-48 behind 15 points apiece from Mandy Silver and Amanda Silver.
Junior Destiny Graham had 29 points as Eastside Prep moved past St. Vincent 68-39. The Panthers will face Brookside Christian in a rematch of the 2012 NorCal finals. Brookside Christian beat St. Francis-Watsonville 58-25.
