CaliforniaPreps Saturday Football Playoff Preview

The 2013 CIF State Football Championship Bowl Games presented by Farmers are set for this weekend. The five game slate is headlined by a colossal battle between undefeated heavyweights St. John Bosco and Concord De La Salle and a solid 3 game schedule on Saturday.

Preview of Three Saturday State Championship Bowl Games
  • OPEN DIVISION: St. John Bosco vs. Concord De La Salle on Saturday at 8:00 p.m.

The game of the year in California is Saturday. The undefeatedSt. John Bosco Braves have reached the State Championship for the first time. They face De La Salle, the Goliath in the state of California making their eighth consecutive trip to Southern California since the bowl games were re-created. John Velasco has rushed for 1,997 yards and 28 touchdowns with promising sophomore Antoine Custer having rushed for 1,141 yards and 14 tds for the Spartans behind an offensive line that has unusual college size for the Spartans. St. John Bosco is led by 5-star quarterback
Josh Rosen on offense and linebacker Chandler Leniu and defensive lineman Jacob Tuioti-Mariner on defense. The key is how St. John Bosco does defensively against a powerful offensive line and a veteran skill position group because they will not be able to score and run at will like they have in many games this season against a Spartan front 7 that has 4 D1 players.

    The Pick: St. John Bosco

  • DIVISION II: Chaminade vs. Enterprise, Redding on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

Chaminade is playing its best in December. The Eagles have avenged 2 regular season losses in the Section and Regional games to advance to the State Championship. They face an undefeated Enterprise team that is led by 2,000+ yard, 27 touchdown junior Isaiah Matthews. Miami bound quarterback Brad Kaaya leads an Eagle offense that has been playing well on defense, getting pressure on the quarterback behind Colorado bound linebacker Rick Gamboa and recent Washington commit Joseph McIntosh.

    The Pick: Chaminade

  • DIVISION III: Corona del Mar vs. Sacred Heart Prep, Atherton on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.

Corona Del Mar heads to the StubHub Center with an undefeated record, trying to become the second team from Orange County to ever go 15-0. They face an underdog from Northern California that is coming off a huge upset. Sacred Heart Prep handled an El Cerrito team that has 4 Division 1 players and 3 Pac-12 players, 42-7, in a game many thought that score would be reversed. Andrew Segre has rushed for 1,444 yards and 20 touchdowns for the Gators. CDM is a solid team behind the offensive trio of senior quarterback Luke Napolitano (2,575 passing yards, 23 tds) and underclassmen running backs Cole Martin (1,718 yds, 21 tds) and Anthony Battista (984 yds, 8 tds).

    The Pick: Corona Del Mar
