CaliforniaPreps Playoffs Preview

The CIF Southern Section semifinals are here and two Pac-5 match-ups, an Inland Division clash, and a Western Division showdown headline the weekend preview. Mater Dei at Long Beach Poly is the CaliforniaPreps game of the week. We'll also be covering the West Torrance vs. Hart game at College of the Canyons.

Preview of Our Fab 4 Games for the Weekend
  • Mater Dei vs. Long Beach Poly at Veterans Stadium on Friday

Two of California's most historic athletic programs face off for the 3rd time in 4 years on Friday in a regionally televised game on Fox Sports West. The teams have split the previous 2 match-ups, with Poly winning last year in the Pac-5 finals. The two teams are quite similar this year: both run heavy offenses, both have a solid quarterback who can make the necessary throws, both have stout defenses, and both have an all american in the secondary. Mater Dei has won 3 straight games and looks to be healthy and peaking at the right time. Poly has won 10 straight games, including an impressive 44-8 thrashing of St. Bonaventure last weekend.

    The Pick: Long Beach Poly

  • Vista Murrieta at Norco on Friday

Vista Murrieta returns to Norco for the second consecutive year in the playoffs. The Broncos won 31-16 in the quarterfinals and this year have the trio of
Colton Gerhart, Kwesi Mashack, and Artie Vasquez. They face their former teammates following a transfer from Norco amidst a tumultuous summer that included the firing of former head coach Todd Gerhart, Colton's father. I would expect a smash mouth game, as Norco, led by running back Cory Young, will run against a Vista Murrieta front seven that includes four Division 1 players led by Oklahoma commit Curtis Bolton.

    The Pick: Vista Murrieta

  • St. John Bosco at Alemany on Friday

The champions of two of the best leagues in Southern California face off, as Trinity League Champion St. John Bosco heads to Mission Hills to face Alemany, the Serra League champion. The Braves are looking to advance to the CIF Finals and avenge their lone blemish on the field last season, a loss in the semifinals. St. John Bosco is balanced offensively with 5-star junior quarterback Josh Rosen and sophomore standout running back Sean McGrew. Alemany is led by dual threat senior quarterback Alif Grayes who has had a terrific season as the full time varsity starter. He faces the best defense he has seen all season on Friday by a considerable margin.

    The Pick: St. John Bosco

  • Lompoc at Chaminade on Friday

Lompoc travels south to West Hills to face a Chaminade team that has been clicking on all cylinders since a loss to Serra on October 18th. Lompoc has a run heavy offense led by junior Derrick Portis and senior A.J. Flores, who has rushed for a combined 2,837 yards and 40 touchdowns. The star of the Lompoc team is 4-star senior defensive lineman Ainuu Taua, who has 35 tackles and 7 sacks this season. Chaminade is led by Miami bound quarterback Brad Kaaya who has been steady all season with dynamic running back Donovan Lee alongside him.

    The Pick: Chaminade
