Pacific Shores Tournament Tuesday's Results
Westchester 72, Long Beach Poly 60By Eric Sondheimer, LA Times
If you want an early candidate for City Section player of the year, mark down the name of 6-foot-5 senior Elijah Stewart of Westchester. He gave little glimpses of his immense skills on Tuesday night, scoring 23 points and playing strong defense in helping the Comets defeat Long Beach Poly, 72-60, in a quarterfinal game of the Redondo tournament.
Stewart signed with Loyola Marymount. Coach Ed Azzam calls him "a puppy learning the game." And if all goes well by season's end, he and the Comets will be trying to win a 13th City title for Azzam, who's in his 35th season as coach.
Stewart arrived from Louisiana as a sophomore. "A terrific athlete," is what Azzam calls him.
It was a good win for Westchester against a physical Poly team that received 28 points from Chris Sullivan, a Cal Poly Pomona signee. But the Jackrabbits were called for three technicals and had trouble scoring when they needed to.
As far as the Comets, Azzam said, "I'm not upset but I'm not pleased. I know we can play better."
All-City forward Nick Hamilton fouled out and wasn't available much to settle down the Comets. Guard Layon Gooden had 19 points. Azzam said there's lots of individual talent, but, "Listening right now is not one of our strengths."
It's a mostly senior team but there is an intriguing 6-6 sophomore in L'Keilynn Taylor, who just turned 14. "They're really good kids and they're trying to do what I want them to do, and they're trying to listen," Azzam said.
Next up for Westchester is a semifinal game on Friday against Redondo or Campbell Hall.
Calabasas 79, Palos Verdes 49By Jack Pollon
The Calabasas boys basketball team earned its first victory of the year with a 79-49 consolation quarterfinal victory against Palos Verdes at the Redondo Union tournament.
Jeremy Lieberman and Larry Bush each scored 20 points to lead the Coyotes, who led 27-5 after one quarter.
Amin Ishmael scored 11 points, Conner Longmire scored 10 points and Austin Smith finished with 10 points and 15 rebounds for the Coyotes.
St. John Bosco 83, Long Beach Millikan 69By Eric Sondheimer, LA Times
Daniel Hamilton had 27 points and 18 rebounds and Tyler Dorsey added 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead St. John Bosco past Long Beach Millikan, 83-69, in a quarterfinal game of the Redondo tournament.
Malik Marquetti led Millikan with 25 points. Mark Thomas had 22 points.
St. John Bosco will play Mayfair in Friday's semifinals.
Redondo Union 68, Campbell Hall 60By Jack Pollon
The Campbell Hall boys basketball team played better than it did in a season opener Monday, but couldn't get over the hump against defending Div. II state champion Redondo Union in a 68-60 quarterfinal setback at the 62nd annual Pac Shores tournament.
Junior guard Aaron Holiday scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds, one night after recording 25 points, to lead the Vikings.
Sophomore guard Jordan Cohen scored 17 points and had four steals.
Gabriel Salazar scored 10 points and forward Colin Bell poured in 10 points with 17 rebounds for Campbell Hall, which played with junior guard Kahlil Simplis (ankle injury).
