Cal gets past SRV
The California Grizzlies hosted the San Ramon Valley Wolves on Saturday night in the 2nd round of the North Coast Section playoffs. The Grizzlies pounded the ball through the Wolves defense without much of a struggle. San Ramon was able to compete, but came up just short at the end of the game, losing by a score of 31-24.
Cal was led by senior running back Blake Bierwith who rushed for 125 yards and 2 touchdowns on 20 carries. Throughout the game, the Grizzlies controlled the ball, chewing up the clock, and scoring touchdowns.
Going into halftime, the score was tied at 17 but after SRV was stopped on its first possession of the 2nd half, the momentum changed in favor of Cal.
Wolves quarterback Matt Winaker hit wideout J.J. Koski for a 45 yard touchdown strike to bring SRV to within seven points. However, the subsequent attempt at an onside kick failed.
The San Ramon attack was led by Winaker who threw for 201 yards and 2 touchdowns, going 25-for-31 through the air. Senior running back Marcus De La Pena was also a huge impact on the game rushing for 175 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries and adding a receiving touchdown.
What many consider a great season for San Ramon Valley, will now end with a new head coachl. As for the Grizzlies, they are still alive and well in the NCS playoffs and will square off against Pittsburg next Saturday. The Pirates are a team that beat Cal earlier this season 35-33 on a goal line stop. It will be interesting to see if Cal can get revenge and Pirates running back Harris Ross.
