NCP Football Top 20
De La Salle avoided a scare at Serra in week 1 while Bellarmine posted a Top 10 win against El Cerrito to cap a wild Saturday of football. We also have two new teams in the rankings following big non-league wins.
NCP Football Top 20
No. 1 De La Salle trailed 14-7 late in the fourth quarter, but a missed Serra field goal and back-to-back Spartan touchdowns allowed De La Salle to escape with a 21-14 win. The Spartans' NorCal winning streak is now at 238 games, but they suffered injuries to wide receiver Adam Mayer and RB/DB Dasmond Tautalatasi. No. 9 Serra played without Notre Dame defensive lineman commitment Matt Dickerson and running back Hamilton Anoa'i, but got good play from quarterback Matthew Fa'aita. De La Salle will travel to St. Mary's-Stockton on Friday while Serra has a bye week.
Vanderbilt quarterback commit K.J. Carta-Samuels rushed for more than 100 yards and three touchdowns in the Bells' 28-25 win over El Cerrito in one of the marquee non-league games of the year. No. 7 El Cerrito got two touchdowns rushing and a passing score from quarterback Keilan Benjamin. The Gauchos were without Cal bound wide receiver Jalen Harvey, who was out due to being ejected in week 0 against Sutter. They will travel to No. 12 Cardinal Newman this week.
DRL flexes muscles
The Delta River League is making an early claim for best league in Sacramento and one of the best in the region. No. 2 Folsom beat No. 4 Granite Bay 30-14 in the NCP Game of the Week. Jake Browning threw for 220 yards and two scores and the Bulldogs rushed for 186 yards as a team.
Pleasant Grove moved up to No. 3 after beating No. 16 Burbank 14-12 in a rematch from last year's playoffs. Ennis Mayberry led a strong defensive effort with 11 tackles as the Eagles head up to Nevada Union (0-2) this week.
To cap the week, Oak Ridge knocked off Rocklin 23-21 behind 242 passing yards and two touchdowns from sophomore Ian Book. The Trojans, ranked No. 18, take on fellow unbeaten Franklin-Elk Grove in one of the top games in NorCal on Friday.
Vacaville, Foothill move into the Top 20
Vacaville narrowly missed the preseason Top 20 rankings and needed just one game to move onto the list with a 20-17 win over Valley Christian-San Jose. The Bulldogs had more balance on offense with 163 yards passing and rushing. David Mewborn ran for 122 yards and a score. Vacaville's defense held Valley Christian to less than 200 yards of total offense. The Warriors got 87 yards and a touchdown from Kirk Johnson. Improvement on defense is a positive sign for the Warriors, which are the defending Central Coast Section Division III champions.
Foothill hasn't had more than seven wins since 2008, but the Falcons could be primed for a bounce back year. They are fresh off a 32-6 win over preseason No. 20 Freedom. Junior Isaiah Langley had two touchdowns and the defense held Joe Mixon to 66 yards on 17 carries. Freedom could be looking at a 0-3 start with Granite Bay this week.
California stumbles on the road
Coming off a loss at Analy, Pittsburg responded with a 35-33 home win against previously ranked California. Pittsburg running back Harris Ross ran for 233 yards and four touchdowns for the Pirates, which take on Monte Vista this week.
California quarterback Cameron Owen had 154 yards and three passing touchdowns and Blake Bierwith finished with 158 rushing yards and two scores. The Grizzlies will try to bounce back against Castro Valley this week.
