Caruso paces Padres

It hasn't been great basketball when Serra and Riordan have met this year, but the Padres have two wins after a 64-56 win over the Crusaders on Wednesday in San Mateo. Princeton-bound Henry Caruso had 22 points and 12 rebounds.

Jacqui Biggins 6-foot-0 PG Serra (2013): Biggins' impact was limited due to two early fouls and a quick third foul in the third quarter, but had 12 points. He is a solid point guard who went 5-for-6 from the free throw line and was able to get some mismatches when he posted up other guards.

Henry Caruso 6-foot-4 F Serra (2013): Caruso was used all over the floor offensively as an outside shooting threat, working his dribble in isolation or on the block. He is more skilled than last season in going 5-for-13 from the field and 11-for-15 on the line. He still needs work as a playmaker in keeping his turnover numbers down, but is put in better spots to highlight his athleticism this year. The 3-star recruit knocked down two outside shots and had a good spin baseline and finish from the right block. Defensively, he saw time on Frankie Ferrari and was a tough rebounder.

Andre Miller 5-foot-11 G Serra (2013): With a lanky 5-foot-11 frame, the right handed shooting Miller leaned heavily on going left in pick and roll sets. He plays with a good first step and has a stutter step action to put his defender on their heels. He was just 1-for-7 from the field for 10 points. Miller can play out of control from time to time, but forms a tough guard combo with Biggins.

Frankie Ferrari 5-foot-11 PG Riordan (2014): The junior went scoreless in the first half, but finished with 14 points on four made three pointers. Ferrari has a quick release and deep range on his shot (he went 4-for-8 from three point range). He has very good vision in making easy passes, but can get too fancy too. He looks to still be finding his way at Riordan, but at the very least, he is a developed spot up shooter.

Chiefy Ugbaja 6-foot-3 F Riordan (2014): Undersized for an inside player, Ugbaja had 13 points in finishing around the basket and also being a shot blocking presence. He gives the Crusaders a frontline option to pair with their stable of guards.

Jiday Ugbaja 6-foot-0 PG Riordan (2014): The No. 36 ranked prospect did good work off the dribble. He can beat his defender off the bounce with a nice first step and good strength to gain the edge. However, he struggled to finish the play with a basket (1-for-8 from the field) or finding open teammates. This was shown down the stretch when he had a good spin move to get free in the paint, but forced the pass inside for a turnover. Ugbaja is also a solid defender moving laterally and being physical against Serra's ball handlers.
