Spartans remain champions
The De La Salle Spartans came into Saturday night's North Coast Section Division I title game unbeaten on the season and hungry for another championship. Their opponent was the California Grizzlies who came into this championship game that many thought they wouldn't even be in. The Spartans were just too dominant, defeating Cal 49-17 to win the NCS crown.
At times it seemed like De La Salle was playing with Cal. As the Spartans did not struggle at all in this game, they are definitely looking forward to what should be an excellent game against Folsom on the Spartans road to a state title.
Cal quarterback Matt Lorenz had carried the Grizzlies this far but there would be no fairy tale ending in the picture.
The Spartans were led by the standout performance of running back John Velasco. The senior rushed for 243 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Rising sophomore Antoine Custer added a touchdown and quarterback Chris Williams had a rushing touchdown.
"We have to take it day by day. We have room for improvement and our focus is on the Sac Joaquin team that won tonight," said Velasco.
As for Cal, senior running back Blake Bierwith provided a slimmer of good in the somewhat horrible day for the Grizzlies. As his team was outscored by 32 points, Bierwith rushed for a solid 117 yards.
Now the Spartans must look forward to an even bigger goal, winning the state title. Next they will have to get past gun slinger Jake Browning and the mighty offense of Folsom. As bigger challenges face the Spartans moving forward, they know they must continue getting better on the path to the state title.
