October 28, 2013The NCP Top 20 saw its first major shake-up of the season as Elk Grove and Bellarmine fell out of the Top 10. Which teams moved up as the calendar turns to November? Also see which schools have the best shot at going undefeated.
NCP Football Top 20
For the first week this season, there was a major shuffling of teams in the rankings as we transition into November football. No. 8 Oak Ridge and No. 9 Mitty moved into the Top 10 and Rocklin has moved up to No. 12. Oak Ridge has only lost to No. 2 Folsom and owns wins over Rocklin, No. 16 Grant and No. 17 Vacaville. Mitty is undefeated after beating St. Francis-Mountain View 13-12. Rocklin started 0-2 with losses to No. 3 Pleasant Grove and Oak Ridge, but control its own destiny in the Sierra Foothill League.
Elk Grove fell from No. 4 to No. 13 after suffering its first loss of the year to Franklin-Elk Grove 28-21. There is a three way tie at the top of the Delta Valley Conference with Elk Grove, Franklin and Grant. Bellarmine suffered its second West Catholic Athletic League loss to Valley Christian-San Jose 31-13. The Bells fell to No. 19, one spot behind the Warriors, but stayed ahead of El Cerrito thanks to an early season 28-25 win.
There are seven teams in the NCP Top 20 that remain undefeated and Casa Grande is on the bubble. Which programs have the best shot at going 10-0 heading into the playoffs? De La Salle heads the list carrying a 34 game winning streak followed by Marin Catholic, which has steamrolled through the Marin County Athletic League. The Wildcats are idle this week. Campolindo has passed its toughest league tests and will try for its second 10-0 mark in the last three years.
Folsom has Pleasant Grove to end the regular season while the Eagles have their two toughest league games left against Oak Ridge and the Bulldogs. The Delta River League title will be decided over the next two weeks.
Deer Valley (against Pittsburg this Friday) and Casa Grande (Cardinal Newman on November 8) each have one major league test left before laying claim to undefeated status.
Carrying a 10-0 record through the West Catholic Athletic League is a tall order and hasn't been done in recent memory. Mitty came the closest in 2009 with a 9-0-1 mark before losing in the first round of the playoffs. The Monarchs play Top 20 ranked Bellarmine and Serra to end the year.
Best of the Rest
There are plenty of talented teams outside of the rankings, led by the preseason ranked Gauchos. They are followed by a group of North Coast Section Division I programs in Pittsburg, Cal, Foothill-Pleasanton and Logan.
Burbank has won five straight games since going 1-2 against a tough non-league slate. The Titans have losses to Top 20 ranked Pleasant Grove and Grant.
Expect the bottom half of the rankings to be fluid over the next month.
