Three of the six Trinity League teams opened the Buzz Elite Varsity?Fall Showcase on Saturday, Oct. 12th at St John Bosco High School in Bellflower. Anaheim Servite, Santa Margarita and the host team, the St John Bosco Braves played in the three morning games that opened a 9 game all day schedule.
Anaheim Servite of the Trinity League faced Long Beach Jordan of the Moore League in the opener. Servite is probably going to be in?a fight to stay out of the league cellar with Santa Margarita, who faced defending California Division 2 state champion Redondo Union in the second contest of the morning.
In the third game, St. John Bosco, a co-favorite with California's defending state champion Mater Dei for the Trinity League championship, played a strong Campbell Hall team from North Hollywood in the morning' s final game.
We'll have game reports on all three morning games, starting with game 1:
Long Beach Jordan 57, Servite 44By Jack Nelson
The Jordan Panthers, coached by James McDonald, took on the Servite Friars from?Anaheim, coached by John Morris, in the 9 am tipoff game of the Varsity Classic.?
This turned out to be a very streaky game after going back and forth? in the opening minutes. The game was tied at 2, 5 and 7. LB Jordan went on a? 19-3 run to take a commanding?16 point lead behind Keshaun Mack and Milan Meeks.
Then Servite came back?to cut the lead back to single figures with a 8-0 run that made it ?26-18 with 4 minutes to play in the first half.
But LB Jordan pushed the lead back to double digits and the first half ended with LB Jordan up 37-23.
The five-minute halftime break really cooled down LB Jordan. With just 6:39 left in the game Trevor Treinen was fouled and went to the free throw line with a? chance to tie the game for Servite but he missed the second attempt and LB Jordan still led 38-37.
That seemed to wake LB Jordan from their scoring slumber and Meeks hit a jumper for their first FG of the second half with? 6:12 to play.
That started them on a 6-0 run to give them a 44-37 lead and they were never threatened again. They led by 7 with a minute to play and then scored the final 6 points for a 57-44 win.
