El Camino Real 73, Chaminade 68By Dave Rogahn
Maleke Haynes scored 19 points and three of his teammates scored in double figures as El Camino Real rallied from a 13-point second-half deficit to edge Chaminade at the 3rd Annual Joe Frazier Benefit Showcase Sunday at Calabasas HS.
It was the day's marquee match-up, featuring probably the top two teams in the San Fernando Valley. Bragging rights, not to mention possibly the #1 spot in the Daily News of Los Angeles preseason rankings, was on the line.
And for much of the game it looked like Chaminade, featuring the towering front line of 6-8 Long Beach State signee Jack Williams and 6-10 sophomore standout Trevor Stanback, would be too big and too good for the defending LA City Section runner-up El Camino Real.
But El Camino Real, trailing, 54-41 with about 11 minutes left, went on a 21-5 extended run to take a lead.
And after Chaminade briefly went back into the lead, El Camino Real got two free throws from Haynes to take the lead for good with 1:13 left. A basket by Evan Wardlow, who is headed to Santa Clara University, and two free throws by Julian Richardson, son of longtime NBA point guard Pooh Richardson, secured the win for El Camino Real.
The teams played on mostly even terms early on, but Chaminade pushed its lead to eight points after a 3-pointer by Williams made it 30-22 with 5:30 left in the first half.
The Eagles held a 6-point lead at 38-32 at the half, and expanded the lead when the second half began. A short jumper by Stanback made it 48-39. Then Jordan Ogundiran and Danny Holcomb made back-to-back 3-pointers to push the lead to 13 points at 54-41.
But then El Camino Real started making threes as well, and went on a 13-2 spurt to get back into the game. A three by Haynes made it 56-52, and then Chris Terry made it 56-54.
Finally a steal & lay-up by Terry gave El Camino Real its first lead of the second half at 60-59 with just over 7 minutes left to play.
The lead went back and forth several times over the next few minutes, with Michael Oguine giving Chaminade a 66-65 lead with a short jumper with 2:10 left.
But Haynes put El Camino Real back in front with two free throws with 1:13 left. Then Wardlow scored on a run out after a pass from Kelton Conway to make it 69-66. Blair Orr's slam dunk moments later made it 71-66.
Chaminade got a basket from Stanback with about 10 seconds left, but Richardson's pair of free throws made it 73-68 and clinched the win for El Camino Real.
Haynes led all scorers with his 19 points, and he added a team-high 4 assists and 3 steals. Wardlow had 15 points and Orr and Richardson each scored 10 points. Orr added a team-high 9 rebounds.
For Chaminade, Williams had the game's only double-double with a team-high 17 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Stanback had 13 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Oguine had 12 points and Max Tinsley added 10 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.
