September 2, 2013Serra star outfielder Neil Sterling recently committed to the University of Utah. Sterling batted .310 with 31 hits, 21 runs scored, and 28 runs batted in and also hit five home runs. The star Padre had always been interested in attending a Pac-12 school since he started playing baseball and now it is a reality.
"I was interested in Utah, because they are a Pac-12 team and I've wanted to play there my whole life. I knew I wanted to commit when I made my visit, it just felt right for me," Sterling said.
Sterling looks to break out of his shell this season while replacing the senior leaders who graduated last year. Entering his junior year, the now top outfielder lacked confidence in key situations. Sterling wants to step up in big moments and hopes to lead his team to a WCAL championship. Last year, the Padres lost in the championship game 12-2 to Bellarmine.
"I'm going to build on last year by learning from the mistakes I made," Sterling said. "I also didn't have the best confidence in myself to come up big in key situations. Last year's senior class carried our team with a great amount of leadership, so I hope to takeover a leadership role, because senior leaders can create chemistry which will lead to success."
The Padre outfielder recalls playing the game since he could walk. Since the age of two, Sterling's dream was to play for UCLA or Stanford, but Utah is the right fit for him. He did complete his dream of playing in the Pac-12 and he should be able to help the Utes win early on.
With Utah going 21-31 last season, there will be room for improvement and Neil Sterling can definitely help them flip that around.
