February 13, 2013On a night it honored its storied senior class and retired the number of former star DeMarcus Nelson, Sheldon continued on its quest for a fourth straight section title in beating Pleasant Grove 84-77.
In a closely contest game throughout, Sheldon led 19-15 after the first quarter and 37-35 at halftime. After opening up the lead in the third, Sheldon led 59-57 after the third quarter before making free throws down the stretch for the seven point win and a perfect 10-0 record in the Delta River League.
Dakarai Allen 6-fooot-6 SF Sheldon (2013): Allen had 27 points and 12 rebounds, including 15 points in the first half and numerous free throws down the stretch. Allen worked well off his dribble with a quick first right handed dribble and showing development with a floater in the lane. He is also able to cover a lot of ground to get past defenders. He is a high level defender who spent plenty of time on Malik Thames.
Matt Hayes 6-foot-0 G Pleasant Grove (2013): Hayes is a knockdown shooter and one of the top marksmen in the Sacramento area, but his shot wasn't falling on Tuesday. He finished with 15 points and made two 3-pointers. He is a smooth catch and shoot option and has a quick release when creating his own shot as a good Division II prospect.
Darin Johnson 6-foot-4 SG Sheldon (2013): After being held to four points in the first half, Johnson finished with 23 points behind a nice third quarter performance. He knocked down a pair of threes in also getting to the rim. The Washington signee does a good job of getting up to top speed while working well laterally.
Ryan Manning 6-foot-6 F Sheldon (2013): Manning struggled to stay on the floor due to foul trouble, but made a pair of big 3's down the stretch and had a thunderous dunk early. His most transferrable skill is the ability to stretch the floor at 6-foot-6.
Cole Nordquist 6-foot-3 W Pleasant Grove (2013): Nordquist scored 15 first half points en route to a game high 31 points and 12 rebounds. He has good handles and proved to be a tough matchup for Sheldon all game. Nordquist can get to the basket, handle contact, has mid-range touch and was consistently at the free throw line. He was also an aggressive rebounder who would fit well as a low major option.
Malik Thames 6-foot-1 PG Pleasant Grove: The unsigned senior point guard let the game come to him early before scoring 12 of his 18 points after halftime. He has a good pull-up game and showed a nice crossover to free himself for two third quarter jumpers. Thames can find the open player and looked comfortable directing the offense and playing off the ball. Good Division I point guard option.
D'Erryl Williams 6-foot-4 CG Sheldon (2013): Williams battled a bum ankle suffered during the game to end with eight points. He showed his versatility to rebound well as a guard and making the extra pass to set up shooters. His skill set fits very well with scorers in Allen and Johnson.
Marquese Chriss 6-foot-6 F Pleasant Grove (2015): Chriss is on the 2015 watch list and that potential was seen against Sheldon. He had four points, but grabbed a couple of tough rebounds and had two near finishes on alley-oops. Chriss also had a good baseline take and grabbed his own miss. In a game dominated by seniors, Chriss was the top underclassman.
